The back creel

The back creel

Scottish back-creels vary between the west and east coast. West coast creels are characterised by an open ‘band’ mid-way up the side, called the briagan or breugan, which may be used for a strap to help carry it, or for helping someone mount the creel on the back, while east coast creels have sides which are fully woven. These creels are unique in Scottish basket manufacture, because they are neither exactly frame- or stake and strand baskets, being made by inserting hooped warp rods into the ground or a ceap (frame) to hold in position, and weaving upwards.
