A visit to this year’s Vintage Agricultural Machinery Rally at Strathmiglo brought some unexpected information about fruit baskets.
The theme of this year’s Vintage Rally (always chosen to highlight methods of food production), was fruit, which still plays an important part in Scottish agriculture. Showing some of his former equipment there there was Peter Middleton, a fruit producer from Coupar Angus, formerly of Arbroath.
Peter had been in the business for fifty years, retiring 18 years ago. He still has a great interest in the business, and had brought with him a wonderful display of fruit equipment, including different kinds of lath baskets and punnets, showing the development from wood to plastic. He kindly let me photograph them for the website.
