Close up of the binding on the most remarkable ciosan. This ciosan from Wester Ross, collected by Isobel Grant, is made from bent grass (marram) with a bramble or willow binding. It is remarkable because of the density of its binding which almost entirely covers the grass coil, so that the binding determines the look of the basket, and would have required a great deal of work. The some bindings link 3 coils at a time. It is quite damaged, and shows signs of much use.
